Physical Features

Black or dark brown with thick woolly coats and white lips

Short stubby tails and long flexible snouts

Behaviour

Solitary and shy

Communicates through high pitched whistle

Forages during the day and rests at night

Habitat

Montane-cloud forest and páramo

2500-4,300 metres above sea level

Cold and humid with low plants grasses and shrubs and drastic daily temperature fluctuations

Diet

Herbivorous

Eats a wide range of plants like leaves, grasses and bromeliads

Seeks out natural salt licks for essential minerals

Reproduction

Breeding maturity at age three and breed once per year

​Gestation of close to 1 year, mother cares for young for around 12 months
