Fifth active maternal den site discovered in Batan Grande.

Oct 03 2011

In July 2011, the transmissions from a GPS collar worn by a female spectacled bear (we call her Laura) went off-line. Field staff were concerned that the this spectacled bear had been killed by nearby hunters. SBC field staff contacted local villages to find out if hunters had been in the area. To everyone’s relief, there had been no hunters spotted in the area. The field staff conducted transects across two cerros, and in late July they found Laura in a den with a new cub. Remote cameras and video equipment were set up nearby to monitor this site to help scientisits better understand reproductive behavior and their maternal needs. To follow Laura's cub's new journey in the dry forest please check out SBC’s facebook fan page or follow the story on our twitter.
