Spectacled bears are a relatively small bear species and get their name from the light coloured rings around their eyes that make some bears look as if they are wearing glasses. They have brown shaggy fur and the distinctive markings on their face or around their eyes is white or yellow in colour. Because they live in warm climates their fur is much thinner than that of the North American species. The adult bear can weight between 30- 173kg with the males being 30% to 40% larger than the females. Spectacled bears have long claws that allow them to climb large trees and scale steep rocky clffs.
