Habitat and Range

The Spectacled bear is the only species of bear in South America, The northern limits of it’s range is Venezuela and continues south through Columbia the Ecuadorian Andes and all three Andean ranges of Peru including a portion of the Pacific coast desert and the eastern slopes of the Andes in Bolivia. Spectacled bears occupy a great variety of habitats, from desert-scrub to forests to high altitude grasslands, ranging in altitude from 250 to 4,750m. With the exception of the dry forest habitat in north coastal Peru Spectacled bears are most commonly found in high elevation forests and upper montane humid forests.
